Tripura’s century-old Kharchi Puja begins

Agartala, July 07: The century-old traditional Kharchi Puja commenced at Chaturdash Devata temple at Khayerpur in West Tripura district on Thursday.
Hundreds of devotees from various places of the sate and Bangladesh were seen in the queue for offering puja to 14 deities on the first day of the week-long festival.
As per the rituals, the traditional Snan Yatra was performed—all the 14 deities Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesha, Brahma, Abadhi, Chandra, Ganga, Agni, Kamdev and Himadri were taken to the River Howrah.
Speaker Ratan Chakraborty, chairman of Old Agartala Panchayat Samiti Biswajit Shil, SDM Jirania Jinabkrishna Acharjee and social activist Amit Nandi among others joined the colourful procession- Snan Yatra.
Meanwhile, Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya in a message greeted the people of Tripura on the eve of week-long Kharchi festival.
A full-proof security has been arranged including installation of CCTVs to avoid any untoward incident during the festival. Security personnel along with volunteers of Civil Defence, Scout and Guide in adequate numbers would be deployed. Like previous years, cultural programmes with participation of local and other artists would be held every day during the puja days.
