Agartala, Dec 03: With the intervention of Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, the standoff regarding areca nut supply from Tripura to Assam came to an end Saturday.
The Chief Minister in a letter had brought the issue to the notice of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Sarma and sought his intervention to ensure smooth transportation of areca nut from Tripura to Assam.
The Areca nut produced in Tripura is transported by the growers and traders to Assam and other states through Assam using Churaibari Check Post located at North Tripura District.
Recently, the truckloads of Areca nuts were denied entry into Assam and confiscated despite having valid documents. Such action of Assam police personnel adversely impacted the livelihood support system of Arecanut growers in Tripura. As a result, the Areca nut growers and traders of the state staged agitation and road blockade.
On this issue, the Chief Minister of Tripura earlier wrote the letter to the Assam Chief Minister and also discussed the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking smooth transportation and trading of Arecanuts by Arecanut growers of Tripura through Assam.
On Saturday, Dr. Saha held another round of discussion with the Assam Chief Minister following which the issue has been solved, according to sources. The Chief Minister's interventions brought a respite among the betel nut growers of Tripura.
