Agartala, Oct 18: In an impetus for higher education, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday inaugurated the state’s first government-run English Medium College.
The new college- Sri Aurobindo General Degree College has been set up at the old DIET building in Kunjaban of Agartala.
Addressing the programme, the Chief Minister said, the new college is a remarkable step towards development of higher education in the state. He said, English language is important for attaining higher education.
The Chief Minister said, opening a new college is not an easy task. But, with the sincere efforts of the Education Minister and the department, the new college has been set up despite all challenges. Dr. Saha said, the government would continue to make efforts towards improving infrastructure and academic arena of the college.
Addressing the students, the Chief Minister said, only academic knowledge is not enough; practical education is equally important. First of all, one has to become a good human being in the society. The students need to become good in academic learning as well as extra-curricular activities. Involvement in social activities is also important.
He also encouraged the students to always respect their elders. He also said, the teachers need to keep themselves ready with new knowledge and information.
The Chief Minister then advised the parents to stay alert for keeping their children away from use of drugs. He said, the state government is also continuing its efforts against addiction.
The Minister for Education said, only through education, one can achieve success in life. The present state government is playing its role responsibly towards development of human resources.
He said, it is possible to build human resources through proper education and improved healthcare services. The government is giving equal importance to these sectors. The Education Minister said, there are 128 pre-primary schools in the state at present.
Addressing the programme, Nath also spoke about the major initiatives taken by his department for the development of the education system.
He highlighted Lakhsya, a scheme introduced by the state government for national level skill development of the students. Nath said, Master Degree Courses in Bengali and English languages have been introduced in six General Degree Colleges.
Principal of Sri Aurobindo General Degree College Dipankar Chakraborty delivered the welcome address. Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumdar and Director of Higher Education N.C. Sharma also spoke on the occasion.
Secretary of Education department Apurba Roy, two Corporators- Hiralal Debnath and Lata Nath and chairman of Aurobindo Society Pradip Nath werealso present in the inaugural ceremony.
