Agartala, May 15: Susmita Sarkar, who is from Sabroom in Tripura, has been selected for Schmidt Science Program fellowship.
Born in 1993, Sarkar passed Madhyamik from Sabroom Girls H.S. School in 2009 and then studied up to Class-XII in Netaji Subhas Vidya Niketan, Agartala.
Next, she completed B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2015 from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala and then moved to the USA to pursue her Master's degree.
She studied Mechanical Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, USA, where she extensively worked on lithium-ion batteries.
Sarkar then moved to Purdue University, West Lafayette for her Ph.D research, which is based on sodium-ion batteries. She became the first Purdue student to be selected for this prestigious fellowship programme.
Her father Sunil Sarkar is a contractor by profession and her mother Swapna Sarkar is a housewife.
She made significant breakthroughs in her field, publishing in the most prestigious journals of the world, like Nature Materials. She was selected as a ‘Rising Star in Mechanical Engineering’ by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 2021. Susmita also bagged several other awards.
Schmidt Science Fellows program is one of the most prestigious fellowships in the world. It is headed by Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. The winners will get $100,000/year to pursue a research topic of their interest anywhere in the world.
