Agartala, Jan 30: Tripura has made significant progress in organ transplantation, with two successful kidney transplants already conducted and preparations underway for heart and lung transplants, officials said.
Addressing a press conference at GBP Hospital, Medical Superintendent Dr. Chandramani Chakraborty stated that the state is strengthening its organ donation and transplantation program under Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s initiative.
Dr. Chakraborty mentioned that GBP Hospital, in collaboration with the Mohan Foundation, is working on establishing a heart-lung transplant network.
He emphasized the importance of public awareness, as organ transplants depend on donations from brain-dead patients.
Dr. Tapan Das, Head of GBP’s Forensic Medicine Department, explained the legal and procedural aspects, stressing the need for a structured system for smooth coordination between hospitals and donor families. He also noted that a transplant coordination committee would be formed to streamline the process.
With infrastructure improvements and expert collaborations, hospital officials believe Tripura is moving toward becoming a key center for organ transplantation in the region.
