Agartala, July 01: Tripura's Khowai district was felicitated by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) as 'Best Performing District' for implementation of Joint Action Plan on "Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse among children and Illicit trafficking".
In the programme conducted for observance of International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking on June 30, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai felicitated District Magistrate, Khowai- Chandni Chandran for the same.
The programme was also attended by the presence of NCPCR Chairman Priyank Kanungao, member secretary NCPCR Rupali Banerjee Singh and Director General Narcotics Control Bureau Satya Narayan Pradhan.
The Khowai district has performed well in all major parameters of the implementation of the programme like installation of CCTV cameras in major medical shops, Prabhari Club activities in schools and enforcement of COTPA act.
In November 2023, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha launched an innovative scheme for prevention of child marriage and bringing back to victims of child marriage back to schools. The scheme- CHESTA (Child Marriage Elimination Through Sensitisation, Tracking and Awareness) was also appreciated for its coverage of both school going and out of schoolgirls, involvement of all stakeholders and incentives for informants.
Since child marriage is the highest instance of human trafficking in Tripura, this scheme was instrumental in helping the district get this recognition.
