Agartala, Jan 15: In a determined effort to draw the attention of ministers on the last day of the winter assembly session, frustrated activists of the Twipra Student Federation (TSF) organized a protest on Wednesday. The protest took place at the foot of the Gandhi statue in the Circuit House area of Agartala, as well as in front of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, demanding recognition of Roman script for Kokborok language.
The primary demand of the tribal student organization, TSF, is for the Roman script to be formally recognized and raised in the Tripura assembly session. The protesters have been calling on the government to officially endorse this demand.
The TSF regards the government's failure to accept their demand as a significant shortcoming. They emphasize that this issue is deeply tied to the emotions and identity of the tribal community. Despite their efforts, the reasons for the government's reluctance to accept their demand remain unclear to the TSF.
Talking to the reporters, TSF vice-president John Debbarma expressed frustration over the lack of progress on their long-standing demand and also accused the indigenous leaders of the state for not prioritizing the long-standing issue.
“We have Minister Shukla Charan Noatia and many other indigenous MLAs, leaders but they chose to keep mum on this issue. We are completely disheartened seeing their action”, he said.
As the protest continued for some time, a large contingent of police and security personnel arrived at the scene. The authorities requested the protesters to disperse, but when they refused to comply, the police detained the agitators and took them to AD Nagar police line.
