Agartala, Aug 5: Tripura Central University has ranked fourth among 66 Universities in the country in terms of popular choice of students for taking admission, as per the number of students applied seeking admission in the Universities for 2022-23 sessions, Vice-Chancellor Ganga Prasad Prasain said on Friday.
As per The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) PG report, from September 1 to 11 over 3.5 lakh students have registered for admissions to 66 universities across the country.
Banaras Hindu University ranked top with 3,53,799 applications while Tripura University received 2,94,816 applications.
Addressing a press conference at the Conference Hall of the varsity the Vice Chancellor said, even as 2,94,816 students have applied for admission, the University has the intact capacity of only 3031 students in all 39 PG courses offered by the University.
He also said, the University has a plan to introduce four new Postgraduate programmes in Social Work, National Security Study, Yoga and Manipuri Dance from 2023-24 sessions.
“We are planning to start new departments for programmes in PG courses in the University. For starting PG courses in the University we must get approval and permission from the Ministry of Education and UGC. As soon as we get permission we shall be starting a new PG department from next academic session onwards (2023-24),” the Vice Chancellor said.
He said plan is afoot to start a PG programme in the departments of Social Work, National Security Study, Yoga and Manipuri Dance. These are the subjects, which are being taught at only five or six universities in the country, he added.
Addressing the media the Vice Chancellor said, Tripura University Business Incubator (TUBI) which was established in 2021 with funding support from the Ministry of MSME, government of India, has taken as initiative to make the campus plastic free.
He said, as part of the initiative, each department of the university is encouraged to use glass-bottled water manufactured in the TUBI.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the university visited the flood-affected areas of Silchar and Karimhanj in Assam and served them pure water through a portable water purifier made in the incubator, Ganga Prasad said.
He said, very soon TUBI is going to form a company under section 8 of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs which will be the first start-up of the University.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the Ministry officials have shown satisfaction with the progress of the TUBI and have been invited to apply for further funding of Rs 1 crore for capacity building.
When the university has not managed to get any rank in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2022-23, the Vice Chancellor is hopeful that the university will improve its performance so that the university can get rank next year.
Meanwhile, a seven member delegation of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has recently visited the university on August 1, 2 and 3 last. The NAAC is likely to publish its report within next week.
The university administration is also willing to fulfil the vacant posts in both teaching and non-teaching sectors soon, the Vice Chancellor said.
Tripura University is also planning to conduct the convocation programme this year, the Vice Chancellor told reporters.
Answering a query, he said due to some reasons which included a corona pandemic the university could not conduct the convocation since after 2018.
As the corona pandemic has gradually normalized, we are planning to organize convocation most probably in this year, the vice Chancellor added.
Deputy Registrar (Academic) Dr Somdev Banik and Binod Chandra Tripathy of Department of Mathematics of the University were present in the press conference.
