Santirbazar, May 14: In another successful raid against ganja smuggling, police have arrested two individuals and seized 99-kg ganja from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Abhijit Das arrested Sonak Choudhury and Parimal Debnath, both residents of Barpathari area.
It was learnt that Sonak Choudhury, who has long been involved in the ganja trade, was transporting a large consignment of ganja towards Naluya in Hrishyamukh Block.
Acting on the tip-off, the police first nabbed Sonak at Jhunjhuni, as he was driving ahead of a ganja-laden Max vehicle, allegedly serving as a lookout and communicating with the driver to ensure safe passage.
After his arrest, Sonak's mobile phone was seized, due to which the communication between him and the Max vehicle driver was disrupted.
Later, the Max vehicle, driven by Parimal Debnath, arrived at the scene and realized that Sonak was in police custody, he attempted to flee but was nabbed by the police at Ratanpur with 99-kg ganja.
The arrested Sonak Choudhury is reportedly the son of Swapan Choudhury, a local BJP leader in Barpathari and a pharmacist by profession.
Allegations have surfaced that certain influential police officials, who have connections with Swapan Choudhury, are attempting to secure Sonak's release in exchange for a substantial bribe.
