Two sisters consume Puffed Rice mixed with rat poison, one dead

Gandacherra, Jan 11: A five-year-old child died, and another child was critically injured after consuming puffed rice mixed with rat poison accidentally at Gandacherra’s Rani Pukur village.

Two sisters- Mainnarung Reang (5) and Milisha Reang (7)—accidentally ate puffed rice laced with rat poison while playing. At the time, no adults were present at home.

When the family members returned from work in the evening, they found the sisters vomiting profusely. The children were immediately rushed to Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital. Due to the severity of their condition, doctors referred them to Dhalai District Hospital for advanced treatment.

Mainnarung succumbed to the poisoning on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Her elder sister, Milisha, is battling for her life.

It was later revealed that the children’s mother had mixed the rat poison with puffed rice and stored it to kill rats. Unaware of it, the girls consumed it, leading to the heart-breaking incident.

The incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the entire village.
