Violence erupts during Makar Sankranti kirtan, 8 injured

Kalyanpur, Jan 15: The peaceful celebration of Makar Sankranti turned into a violent clash on the night of January 14 at Ghilatali's Pal para in Kalyanpur.
Locals alleged that a longstanding tension over the order of participation in the annual kirtan led to a brutal confrontation that led to the injury of nine individuals. While police sources confirm nine injured, the Kalyanpur Hospital reported a total of eight casualties, four of whom were referred to the GB Hospital due to serious injuries.
The situation escalated around 8:30 PM, when two members of one kirtan group were ambushed by a rival faction. The attackers attempted to abduct the victims, dragging them toward the jungle. The ensuing commotion attracted others, and the confrontation quickly turned violent, with sticks, daggers and sharp weapons being used in the brawl.
Among the injured were several locals, including senior citizens and women. The victims have been identified as Parimal Sarkar (60), Gopal Sarkar (40), Haribol Sarkar (50), Sanjit Sarkar (45), Bandhan Biswas (35), Mithun Sarkar (28), Bishwajit Sarkar (31) and Ranjit Sarkar (38).
Kalyanpur police were alerted to the violence and rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to Kalyanpur Hospital. Additionally, a large police force has been deployed in Pal Para to maintain order. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, with the police stating to take appropriate action against the culprits.
