Belonia, Feb 11: Six people were arrested after a suspected thief was beaten to death by a mob in the Bashpadua area of Belonia under South district on Monday.

The victim, identified as Babul Miah, was a resident of Muzaffar Colony in Belonia. Police said that at least 9 people were picked up in connection to the case on Monday last from their Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya area, where after a thorough investigation, police arrested 6 people. Other three people were released due to lack of evidence.

The detained were identified by the police as Mohammad Mostafa (20), Abul Hossain, (40), Utpal Dey (24), Akash Das (23), Sanjay Tewari (45), and Shiv Shankar Sarkar (23). All of them were produced before the court in Belonia on Tuesday noon, where police sought a 3-day police remand.

Local residents said Babul Miah was caught red-handed while he was scaling the school’s boundary wall. The deceased’s family later lodged a case against several unnamed people with the police of Belonia police station.
