Belonia, March 27: In a heartbreaking incident, a class 12 students on Wednesday last drowned to death while taking a sacred Baruni snan (Holy bath) in Muhuri river. The incident triggered panic among the family members.
The incident took place after the deceased student identified as 18 years old Sayan Pal went to take a holy dip in Muhuri river under the Manurmukh railway bridge along with his friend. Sayan along with another friend Deep Mitra drowned under water during the bath as they did not know swimming.
Although the near by people who came for the holy bath did not attempt to rescue the both, one bystander Diptanu Karmakar jumped into the water and managed to rescue Deep Mitra. Despite his effort he however failed to rescue Sayan, following which he drowned under the water. He shouted for help but no one responded.
Alarmed by the incident, fire engine crews rushed to the spot and launched a search operation in the Muhuri river with the help of some local youths, where one 17 years old Akash Sen took a life jacket from the fire engine crews and jumped into the water to pull out Sayan’s body from water.
Sayan was rushed to Belonia hospital, where the doctors declared him brough dead. After an autopsy, the body was handed over with the family members.
