Agartala, Sep 21: After the opposition CPI(M), the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Saturday disagreed with the Tripura government’s special relief package of Rs 564 crore and demanded the Centre to announce a special financial package solely for the flood victims of the state.
Addressing a press conference here at Agartala Congress Bhavan, the PCC President Ashish Kumar Saha expressed his concern over the Tripura government’s Rs 564 crore relied package and argued that the package was announced merely for the restoration of physical assets without provisions for the affected people.
“One months have passed by since devastating floods hit the state, causing extensive damage to crops and livelihoods, along with significant destruction of infrastructure, but the relief package as announced by the state government has not yet reached to the flood victims,” he alleged, adding that the Centre has also not yet sanctioned any package for the flood victims of the state, who are reeling under crisis.
He said, “During the all party meeting called by the government, we strongly urged the government and the Centre to stand by the affected people and also we demanded the government to declare the state as a national disaster zone, but no necessary initiative was taken yet.”
“Farmers, the poor, and those engaged in animal rearing are among the hardest hit but have received no support from the state government,” he said and alleged that the administration instead of supporting the flood victims, who are still taking shelter in the relief camps are being forced to leave the camps, which cannot be entertained.
Saha warned that if the Centre failed to assist, the Congress will take to the streets in support of the farmers and the poor.
On the other hand, the congress chief on Saturday stated that the prices of rations goods including sugar has been increased just ahead of the festive season, following which the poor are facing trouble. He however urged for the intervention of the state food and civil supplies department to restore the price.
