Dharmanagar May 15: In a promising development, the Krishi Bikash Kendra under Panisagar sub-division of North Tripura district reported excellent results in litchi cultivation.
With approximately 150 trees thriving in the Krishi Bikash Kendra’s own premises, each tree yields over 70 kg of litchi. These succulent fruits are then sold to traders, contributing to the local economy.
What’s remarkable is that litchi tree production demands minimal effort and relies on organic fertilizers such as cow dung, manure and vermicompost.
Dr. Sajal Debbarma, Subject Matter Specialist in Horticulture at the Centre for Agricultural Sciences, emphasized the ease of cultivation.
As summer approaches, the markets in Tripura state witness an abundance of delectable fruits, including watermelon, mango, litchi and grapes.
However, Dr. Debbarma advises caution when consuming these fruits.
Customers are urged to soak them in a solution of baking soda, salt or vinegar for 10 to 15 minutes.
This precaution is essential because some fruits may contain harmful chemicals like Calcium carbide, which can lead to various health issues.
