Churaibari, August 20: Continuous heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage in rural areas, severely affecting locals at Sarla village under Kadamtala block in North Tripura district.
A water plantation project, costing Rs 10 crore, was initiated by the DWS department to address long-standing drinking water issues.
The project was assigned to Dipan Nath, owner of DN Construction in Dharmanagar. However, alleged unscientific construction methods led to the collapse of a dam after two days of heavy rain, resulting in losses worth lakhs of rupees.
The dam failure submerged vast areas of farmland and damaged crops and washed away fish from local ponds.
Farmers reported losses between Rs 15-20 lakh due to the flood.
Additionally, the road built for project access has also caused significant inconvenience to locals, with claims that the contractor did not deliver on promises of compensation.
Villagers demanded a thorough investigation into the project’s quality, fair compensation for the affected and a restart of the work.
They have appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for intervention.
