Intense heat wave hits public life, farming sectors

Agartala, Apr 16: Tripura is experiencing a heat wave for the last few days. Temperature is hovering around 40 degree Celsius in many places. As the scorching sun breathes fire, the heat seems to radiate off every surface. People are finding it difficult to venture out.
With the mercury soaring high, parents are worried about sending their lads to schools. Many parents demanded school authorities should announce holidays so that children fall sick owing to excessive heat.
In Agartala, sales of cold drinks and ice creams spiked noticeably - the local ice cream vendors are doing brisk business.
The dry spell has left the sources of water dry and also cast troubles for the farmers in the State.
In the Kumarghat sub-division, the vegetable fields are getting destroyed due to intense heat. Farmers of Telia, Krishnanagar, Jagannathpur, Bhati Sonaimuri, Jalai villages of the Kumarghat sub-division who cultivated cucumber, chilly and other vegetables in the land are staring at huge losses.
One of the farmers, Tapan Deb said that by selling cucumbers, he would have earned about Rs 30,000, but since the cucumbers were spoiled owing to the heat, future is dark. The farmers are demanding the government to assess the extent of their losses and provide them with government assistance.
