Agartala, Apr 13: Suicide by a government employee triggered huge sensation and raised a serious question on the police’s role for alleged harassment.
Prabir Lodh, an employee of West Tripura DM office, committed suicide following detention of East Agartala women police on the basis of a complaint (rape attempt) of a widow, who is also an employee of the same office.
The person was reportedly called by woman police officer Mousumi Debbarma to appear in the police station on Thursday evening.
He was, however, released from the police station after his lawyer reached there. Lodh was allegedly subjected to serious harassment before being released from the police station. He was reportedly asked to reappear in the police station to mutually dispose the case (rape attempt) by 11 am on Thursday.
Shamed and distraught at the police highhandedness, Lodh on Thursday morning committed suicide triggering high sensation in the city. Demand for action against the police officer Debbarma was raised and the social media went aflame on the issue.
The Tripura Commission for Women had also taken up the case earlier.
According to sources, name of a Reang woman employee also crept in the entire episode allegedly for exerting pressure on the police officer to pursue the case with ‘special interest’.
