Agartala, Oct 18: Sparking a controversy and triggering question over the role of the authority of a shelter home, a helpless mother found her daughter disappeared from the ‘Mangalalok Matrisadhan’ Shelter Home, located at Agartala Indranagar area and accused the authority of selling their daughter.
The incident took place on Friday after the mother Sabita Debnath rushed to the shelter home and found her daughter had disappeared from the home on Thursday last. She targeted the shelter home authority and alleged, “My daughter was sold by them after she was being tortured. Being in the shelter home my daughter earlier cried and complained that she is being tortured in the home.”
“Firstly, my daughter was taken to the Ambassa shelter and later she was shifted here at Agartala. But we were never informed about it,” she told reporters, adding that her daughter was shifted to the home as she got married at her minor age. She also informed that soon after she went to the District Magistrate to get back her daughter, the shelter home authority expressed their anger and displeasure on this.
She said, “This signifies that my daughter was sold. Despite we have requested multiple times, the shelter home had refused to hand over my daughter with us. Now, upon learning about the absence of my daughter in the home, I rushed here.”
On being asked about the sudden disappearance of Sabita Debnath’s daughter from home, the Superintendent of the Home disagreed with the allegation raised by Sabita Debnath and said, “Now that she turned 18, she had willingly moved to her husband’s house to reunite with her husband.”
The superintendent, who however failed to furnish a clear information about the present whereabouts of Sabita Debnath’s daughter, who was found absent in the shelter home, further said, “The young woman, who had previously been taken in due to her minor marriage, had now turned 18 and was no longer required to stay in the shelter.”
The incident has sparked tension among the family members and also triggered questions over the role of the authority of the shelter home.
