Agartala Oct 27: NSUI (National Students’ Union of India), a student unit of Tripura Pradesh Congress on Thursday criticized the fee hike in the Tripura Medical College and ascribed the move to the “Grant-cut policy of the ruling government”.
Pradesh NSUI leadership added that the move will make accessibility to higher education difficult for the students from middle and weaker sections.
Recently an allegation of hiked fees in several courses of Tripura Medical College, Hapania, including MBBS has surfaced among various quarters.
Opposing the decision of hiked fees, NSUI Tripura Pradesh conducted a press meet at the Congress Bhavan, Agartala on Thursday.
Addressing the press, NSUI state president Samrat Roy said, “Higher education is a mean to bring social change in the direction of social justice. But it cannot be achieved with such increase in students’ fees resulting from grant-cut policy of the BJP government”.
He further added, since the BJP-IPFT coalition government came to power fees of various medical courses in Tripura Medical College has been increased three times in a row.
Roy vehemently protested the fee hike adding that due to the increase in fees, the students are afraid of how they will study medicine.
NSUI demanded immediate rollback of increased fees.
He said the medical college fee in 2021-22 was Rs 54 lakh and now it has been increased to about Rs 68 lakh. Moreover, the hostel fees have also been increased.
NSUI alleged that the move was forced by the Chief Minister who also holds the charge of Health Minister.
NSUI further warned to launch larger movement in the near days if the hiked fees are not withdrawn immediately.
Meanwhile, the president of the organization also addressed the press conference about the shortage of teachers in educational institutions. He also demanded that the results of JRB be published soon.
