Kanchanpur, Oct 29: In a shocking incident, Officer-in-Charge Buddhadeb Debbarma of Vangmun Police Station is accused of providing false information to the Director General of Police (DGP) regarding a heinous gang rape of a young Reang woman.
The OC claimed that the victim never approached the police with her complaint.
Later, it was revealed that despite multiple attempts, the victim’s complaints were reportedly ignored, following which she sent a written complaint to North Tripura’s Superintendent of Police (SP), Bhanupada Chakraborty, through the Indian Postal Service on August 17.
In an alleged bid to shield the high-profile accused, Dr. Dayashish Chakma, a well-known doctor, police officers are accused of engaging in illegal activities to earn several lakhs in bribes rather than registering the gang rape case.
Though pressured by the court to file an FIR, OC Debbarma was later compelled to file the case.
Besides, another accused, Rajendra Debbarma, a driver for the Fire and Emergency Services Department, was arrested.
However, the key accused Dr. Chakma remains untouched, allegedly due to his influence and the wealth he provides police officials.
The doctor, reportedly the mastermind behind the crime, is said to have acquired assets worth Rs 150-200 crore in West Tripura alone, under his and his wife Suparna Chakma's names.
The Reang community has expressed deep dissatisfaction over the incident.
