Agartala, Jan 2: The AGMC and GBP Hospital is planning to initiate organ donation from brain-dead patients to save the lives of needy patients, according to officials.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of GB Hospital and HoD, highlighted the hospital’s achievements and announced the new organ donation initiative. He said that the hospital administration is planning to collaborate with ‘MOHAN Foundation,’ a leading NGO in organ donation and transplantation in India, to implement this plan.
Dr. Chakraborty stated that a meeting will be held in the last week of this month with the NGO in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, legal experts, local NGOs and other key officials.
Following this, a workshop will be conducted. Based on the feedback, the hospital hopes to soon start organ transplantation, beginning with kidney transplants, he added.
Highlighting past achievements, Dr. Chakraborty mentioned that the hospital successfully conducted several critical operations including two kidney transplants last year. He emphasized that the hospital is well-equipped for similar surgeries in the future.
Besides, nine super-specialty departments have been established at the hospital and medical college, with seven offering both indoor and outdoor services, Dr Chakraborty added.
When asked about issues faced by patients in obtaining prescribed medicines from the hospital’s associated store, Dr. Chakraborty urged patient parties to submit written complaints if they encounter such difficulties. He clarified that no formal complaints have been received so far, apart from a few verbal grievances.
However, patient parties claimed they often face challenges in availing of medicines and the hospital authorities have not taken adequate action. Dr. Chakraborty reiterated his commitment to addressing written complaints promptly.
Vice Principal Prof. Tapan Majumder, Dr. Anindya Trivedi and other officials also attended the press conference.
