Agartala/ Khowai, Feb 17: At least 16 BJP workers were injured in two incidents of post-poll violence since Thursday night.
Tension ran high at Vivekananda Abasan under 6- Agartala assembly constituency after some BJP karyakartas were attacked by the miscreants allegedly backed by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman.
At least six BJP workers were injured in the incident and they were shifted to GBP hospital.
Speaking to the media on Friday, BJP candidate from Agartala constituency Papia Dutta alleged that when she went to Vivekananda Abasan after receiving call from one the party karyakartas, she found that there was a crowd of around 100-150 people from various places.
She alleged that the ‘heavyweight MLA’ had brought together the notorious mafias and tried to create unrest.
In protest against the incident, Dutta along with a large group of BJP activists gheraoed New Capital Complex police station. The agitators demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and the protest continued for a long time.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee and others visited the injured BJP karyakartas at GBO hospital.
Meanwhile, Roy Barman alleged that some of the Congress workers of Vivekananda Abasam were attacked by BJP-backed miscreants. He also visited NCC police station and demanded action against the attackers. He also questioned the police’s role.
There was also report that a bomb was recovered from the area.
In a separate incident of post-poll violence, 13 people including 10 BJP workers were injured at Singicherra in Khowai district on Friday.
A clash broke out between BJP and CPM workers at Singicherra in reference to a previous incident of attack on BJP worker Kanai Shukladas.
Thirteen people including two CPM workers and 10 BJP workers were injured in the incident and they were taken to hospital. The other injured person is a DIB staff- Goutam Shukladas. He was attacked while capturing video of the injured persons under treatment in the hospital.
Six among the 13 injured persons were referred to GBP hospital for better treatment.
Speaking to the media, BJP-nominated candidate from Khowai Subrata Majumder alleged that the CPM-Congress workers unleashed large-scale violence at Singicherra area since Thursday night.
Meanwhile, a statement of CPM leader Padmakumar Debbarma held BJP’s instigation responsible for the incident.
Meanwhile, three persons were held in connection with the clash.
On the other hand, Opposition Leader Manik Sarkar on Friday visited several CPM workers, who were injured in poll violence on Thursday, at GBP hospital.
Sarkar alleged, the party worker Salgarah assembly constituency was injured after being allegedly attacked by miscreants on the way to polling station.
Speaking to the media, he also said that a similar incident of attack on CPM workers was held near the market after Dhanpur. When the CPM workers tried to prevent at attempt of rigging, they were attacked.
