Agartala, Aug 30: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has fulfilled all the necessary requirements set by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for declaring Maharaja Bir Bikram airport, Agartala as an Immigration Check Post (ICP) and requested the MHA to consider the proposal.
The development was informed to MP Biplab Kumar Deb by the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Muralidhar Mohor. He informed, the proposal is currently under consideration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In the recent Rajya Sabha session, Deb raised the demand to declare MBB Airport as an international airport.
According to the letter of the MoS, Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Finance (Revenue department) already notified Agartala Airport as a Customs Notified Airport on January 4, 2023.
The Minister also added that the status of an international airport depends on various factors, including the airport's traffic capacity, demand from airlines for operating international flights, and bilateral air service agreements. It also involves ground lighting facilities, Instrument Landing System (ILS), runway length, immigration, and health services, among other criteria.
