TECA demands repeal of Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021
Agartala, Jul 21, 2022, TRIPURATIMES Desk
Tripura Electricity Consumers’ Association, an organization under the All India Electricity Consumers' Association, staged an agitation in Agartala to press six-point charter of demands including repeal of Electricity (Amendment) Bill- 2021.
The agitators alleged that the central government introduced an Electricity (Amendment) Bill in 2021 for privatization of power sector in three categories- production, transportation and distribution. However, the government had failed to pass the Bill in the face of massive protest across the country.
But, the BJP government is trying to pass the Bill in the on-going Monsoon Session of Lok Sabha, they said, adding that the government was creating pressure on the power production companies for purchasing coal being imported from other countries at a high cost. As a result, they are anticipating that the central government’s move would lead to a major hike in the power tariff.
Speaking in the protest programme, convener of Tripura Electricity Consumers’ Association Sanjoy Chowdhury termed the Electricity (Amendment) Bill as anti-people and raised demand for immediate withdrawal of it. He also demanded to end load-shedding problem in the state.
Chowdhury also appealed to the power consumers to launch a united movement to press the six-point charter of demands.
