Agartala Dec 18: Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha on Sunday took part in the golden jubilee celebrations of North East Council at Shillong.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers and Governors of other northeastern states also took part in the golden jubilee celebration of the NEC, a planning body constituted in the year 1972 to undertake planning and execute developmental projects of the northeastern states including Tripura.
“North-Eastern India today has become the epicenter of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah”, said Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha in his facebook post.
Chief minister Dr Manik Saha claimed that the Northeast witnessed “unprecedented” development in the last 8 years under the BJP-led NDA government with focus on infrastructure creation, ensuring better healthcare, education and popularizing the rich cultures from different states of the North-eastern region.
Established by an Act of the Parliament in 1971 (Act No. 84 of 1971), NEC was formally inaugurated on November 7, 1972, at Shillong, Meghalaya, marking the beginning of a new chapter of concerted and planned endeavour on the part of the Government of India for the North Eastern Region. Originally consisting of the seven states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, Sikkim was included as the eighth member state through the NEC (Amendment) Act, 2002 (68 of 2002), as per an official press release.
