Agartala April 15: The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP over the issue of crime against women.
Addressing the reporters from the Pradesh Congress Bhavan in the state capital, former TPCC President and incumbent MLA Gopal Chandra Roy alleged the BJP’s ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ slogan to be the biggest ‘Jumla’.
In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Tripura is witnessing a direct fight between the ruling BJP-TIPRA Motha alliance and I.N.D.I.A bloc comprising CPI-M and Congress.
Both the alliance has engaged in a battle with an aim to ensure victory in both the Parliamentary Constituencies of the state.
Speaking about the concept of ‘Nari Nyay’ enlisted in the poll manifesto of Congress for the Lok Sabha Polls 2024, Gopal Chandra Roy said, “Congress promises to give poor women Rs 1 lakh per year, reserve 50 percent of Central government jobs for women, double support for ASHA, Anganwadi and Mid0Day meal workers, among other schemes”.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his statement, ‘Modi ki Gurantee’, Roy said, “In past 10 years, rate of crimes and violence against women has increased at an unprecedented rate in the country. And what is most surprising is that in many such cases where women or minor girls have been subjected to atrocities of various kinds including rape, gang rape and murders, many suited booted BJP leaders and Karyakartas are responsible for the crimes”.
“But only because of being in power and for being associated with the ruling party, those culprits are saved from punishment”, he alleged.
Highlighting few incidents of crime against women in Tripura registered in past few years of BJP rule, the Congress MLA said, “Protection and empowerment of women is not a matter to play politics with. We should rise above politics to protect our women”.
Urging the people to support the I.N.D.I.A bloc candidates in both the seats, Roy said, “It is the voters who must make the choice between going for tall and fake promises of the BJP that has already failed miserably to keep its promises made to the people or cast votes in favor of I.N.D.I.A bloc candidates that promises real development”.
AICC secretary Szarita Laitphlang who also remained present at the day’s press conference urged the party workers and supporters to actively take part in Priyanka Gandhi’s rally scheduled to be held in the state capital on April 16 next.
