Sonamura, Feb 04: In an anti-drug operation on Monday, Sonamura police seized 132.6 kg of ganja from five drums at the house of Saiful Alam in Anandapur, Kamalnagar. The police also arrested Alam’s father-in-law, Ibrahim Mia, while Alam himself remains absconding.
According to Sonamura police official Jayanta Kumar Dey, the raid was conducted by Inspector Biplab Debbarma, Sub-Inspector Jayanta Das, TSR personnel, and women officers. While destroying a ganja plantation in Kamalnagar, the team received intelligence about Alam and Mia’s involvement in large-scale cultivation. The duo had been harvesting and drying ganja plants at home for packaging and distribution.
Upon receiving the tip-off, police swiftly surrounded the house and later brought in Deputy Magistrate Anamika Debbarma for further action. The seized ganja and the arrested suspect were taken to Sonamura police station, where a case was registered. On Tuesday, Ibrahim Mia was presented in court and sent to two-day police remand.
Meanwhile, sources claim that the real financiers behind the illicit trade were spotted near the court premises, hinting at a larger network still at large.
