Agartala, Feb 22: The drug trafficking in Tripura seems to have hit a dead end with multiple successive operations being carried out by the Security Forces and sister agencies including Assam Rifles.
In a major crackdown, the Assam Rifles alongwith Customs Dept successfully seized 2286.9 kg of ganja from Bijoynagar area in West Tripura district on Saturday. This was one of the biggest ganja seizures in the state in recent past.
Based on a specific intelligence input, the joint team seized contraband estimated to be worth Rs. 10.29 crore in international market. The operation also resulted in apprehension of two individuals.The seized contraband and the apprehended individuals were handed over to authorities for further legal action.
In another major operation based on intelligence input about movement of drugs from Bangladesh, the joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs Department launched an operation at Badharghat area in West Tripura district.
However, the Security Forces found 1.15 kg of gold in place of drugs. Estimated value of the seized gold-- 14 gold bars and unfinished ornaments of 24 carats is Rs. 1.02 crore in the international market.
The consignment was reportedly smuggled from Dubai to Bangladesh before reaching Tripura and was bound for New Delhi post melting in Tripura.
This operation also led to the apprehension of two individuals belonging to West Bengal and New Delhi. The seized gold and the apprehended individuals were handed over to the authorities for further legal action.
According to a press release, the successful interdiction is part of the on-going efforts by Assam Rifles and is in line with the Chief Minister's vision of Neshamukt Tripura.
Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles has carried out 20 successful operations since January, this year, recovering contraband items worth Rs 65.56 cr.
Assam Rifles in collaboration with sister agencies remains vigilant and committed to disrupting narcotics networks operating in the state, the press release said.
