Agartala Nov 17: There is growing frustration and anger among the local residents in Unakoti district following the closure of several essential services at the Unakoti District Hospital.
The community is particularly disturbed by the prolonged shutdowns of the CT scan service and the oxygen plant, which have significantly impacted healthcare delivery.
Notably, the CT scan service at Unakoti District Hospital has been non-operational for an extended period, leaving many patients without crucial diagnostic support. Compounding the issue, the oxygen plant at the hospital has been out of service for nearly a year, despite being constructed at a considerable expense in 2022. The plant became non-functional at the beginning of 2023, rendering it unusable for the patients who rely on it.
However, this problem is not isolated to the Unakoti District Hospital alone. All sub-divisional hospitals in Unakoti district have reported similar issues with their oxygen plants.
The situation has raised serious questions among the patients and their families about the efficacy of such investments if they do not benefit the common people.
The newly appointed Medical Superintendent of Unakoti District Hospital, Dr. Rohan Pal, when asked about the issue, explained that the department's agreement with the company responsible for maintaining the oxygen plant had expired, and a new agreement is pending approval from higher authorities.
He stated that he has informed the department's director in writing, urging them to restart the oxygen plant service as soon as possible.
Although Dr Pal noted that the oxygen plant had been broken for the past six months, the community members pointed out that the issue has persisted for over a year. Additionally, the long-term closure of the CT scan service has heightened the anger and frustration among the general public.
