Agartala, June 23: Alleging that democracy is in peril in the state of Tripura, the opposition CPI-M party on Thursday alleged of ‘proxy voting’ in some of the booths of all the four assembly constituencies of Agartala, Bordowali, Surma and Jubarajnagar.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday evening, the CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhury alleged, “A large scale of proxy voting took place during the polling on Thursday under the instigation of the ministers and leaders of the BJP party.”
“A large number of the motor-bike borne hooligans and outsiders were mobilized during the time of entire voting process,” Choudhury accused the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and other ministers of the BJP government of roping in party cadres from outside to prevent the voters from exercising their democratic rights.
“It is very unfortunate that the assembly constituency of the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha which was termed as model booths went in vain, as a large scale of proxy voting took place in the constituency of 8-Town Bordowali. This model booth is made just like that of Biplab Kumar Deb’s model state,” Chowdhury further alleged that there was no webcasting in most of the booths under this constituency.
He said, “We demand repolling in six polling booths under 6-Agartala constituency, 11 booths under 8-Town Bordowali constituency and other booths in Surma and Jubarajnagar constituency, as series of proxy voting took place on those booths.”
He also questioned the role of police and alleged, “A section of Tripura Police on Thursday acted on behest of the BJP during the time of polling while the outsiders were on spree to prevent voters from casting their vote, although mobilization of central paramilitary forces were limited.”
“The ruling BJP has become politically bankrupt and isolated from the people of this state. Worried of this the BJP had started hatching terror-tactics across the state since after the declaration of this by-elections to maintain its existence,” Choudhury alleged.
