Bishalgarh Oct 30: Alleging medical negligence that caused the death of a newborn baby at the time of delivery, a group of family members stormed the Bishalgarh hospital.
On the other hand, the doctor on-duty asserted that the baby died due to physical problems as the pregnant woman was a minor.
Police arrested five persons in connection with the hospital ransacking incident.
Family members of the deceased newborn said that Rabina Das, wife of Mithun Das of Bishalgarh Gate No. 2 area, was brought to the Bishalgarh Hospital with labour pain on Saturday evening.
The doctor on duty at the hospital rushed Rabina Das to the delivery ward where she gave birth to a baby boy.
But despite of several attempts, the newborn did not respond.
Seeing the critical condition, the doctor referred the baby to TMC Hospital in Hapania.
But after taking the newborn to TMC hospital, the doctor said that the newborn had died long ago adding that he could have been saved if brought earlier.
Resented over the situation, angry family members ransacked the Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital alleging the doctor to be responsible for their child’s death.
On the other hand, Soumya Kanti Sinha, the doctor on duty at the hospital, alleged that the pregnant woman was a minor and complications arose during childbirth. Due to the drying up of amniotic fluid in the womb of the pregnant mother, there was a lot of pressure on the baby's head and body during childbirth.
Though the child was born alive but did not respond at all.
“We made all efforts to save him. Later, as his condition worsened, we urgently referred to Hapania Hospital. The child died in the ambulance on the way to Hapania Hospital” said the doctor.
A heated situation was created in the hospital premises based on the incident.
Later, Bishalgarh PS OC Badal Chandra Saha and TSR jawans rushed to the hospital.
A total of five people were arrested by police for vandalizing the Bishalgarh hospital.
