Dharmanagar Sept 27: Irked at the deplorable road conditions on National Highway No. 8 for years, frustrated villagers took matters into their own hands and staged a protest by blocking the highway at Shanichhara in the North District on Wednesday.
According to the agitators, the Assam Agartala National Highway has become perilous due to a lack of road maintenance by the authorities, pushing residents to take action.
Local residents, along with motorists, joined in the road blockade to draw attention to their pressing road concerns. Soon after the blockade was started Police personnel from the Churaibari police station and the Shanichhara Gram panchayat Pradhan Laxinder Sinha rushed to the site.
Sinha, the chief of the local village panchayat, arrived at the scene to reassure both drivers and villagers. Following his assurances and the promise of road renovation efforts, agitators lifted the blockade. The authorities pledged to take immediate action to address the dilapidated road conditions.
During the hour-long blockade, many vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the highway.
