Agartala, Feb 4: In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized contraband worth nearly Rs 30 lakh and arrested nine drug peddlers from Agartala railway station on Monday night.

Officer-in-Charge of GRP police station, Tapas Das, said the detainees, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tripura, were caught with 15 thousand bottles of cough syrup.

It was learnt that the arrested individuals were part of a larger smuggling network and authorities are now working to track down other members of the syndicate.

The arrested individuals were identified as Amit Kumar Srivastav (Bihar), Chintu Yadav (Uttar Pradesh), Suman Mia (Abhaynagar), Chutan Deb (Khayerpur), Aktar Hussein (Teliamura), Rajib Sutradhar (Krishnanagar), Mazanur Islam (Navinagar, Bishalgarh), Chand Mia (Rajnagar, Teliamura) and Prasenjit Das (Ampi Nagar). They were produced before the court on Tuesday.
