Agartala, Apr 4: Local people of Aralia in Agartala have raised concerns over the worsening condition of the Howrah River.
According to locals, idols from recent religious festivals have been dumped into the river and no proper steps were taken to remove them. The river is now filled with plastic bottles and various kinds of waste, making it unhygienic and unpleasant, the locals added.
The locals also pointed out that the river, once known for its clean water and sandy banks, is now filled with mud and sludge. Earlier, people used to bathe and catch fish in the river, but now most avoid it due to pollution and foul smell.
“The condition of the water is very bad. There’s garbage everywhere. The river needs urgent attention,” said a resident.
The locals urged the state government to take immediate steps to clean the river and build strong riverbank protection to prevent people from throwing waste into it.
