Agartala March 25: On the third day of ongoing Budget Session 2025-26, Leader of Opposition and CPI-M MLA Jitendra Choudhury filed a Privilege Motion against Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ratan Lal Nath for alleged breach of parliamentary privileges.
The motion was submitted under Rule 173 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Assembly.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker, Tripura Legislative Assembly, the CPI-M State Secretary alleged that Minister Nath made derogatory and racially charged remarks during the budget discussion on Tuesday.
“The statement in question, "জীতেনবাবু জাতের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন" (translated as "Jiten babu has demonstrated his tribe"), which is not only derogatory and abusive but more racial against myself, my family and my community”, it read.
The petition further added, “It is a clear breach of privilege which has been committed by Minister Ratan Lal Nath while I was initiating my discussion on 24-03-2025 on the Budget of the year 2025-26”.
While the Speaker is expected to review the motion and decide on the course of action in the coming days, the LoP highlighted the need for maintaining decorum and respect with the legislative proceedings.
