Agartala Jul 06: The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud has recommended the name of Justice Subhasis Talapatra, as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.
The three-member collegium comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna recommended the name of seven judges for the appointment of Chief Justices in seven High Courts of the Country to the Centre including the name of Justice Subhasis Talapatra for Orissa High Court.
A notification issued on behalf of the Supreme Court collegium mentioned that a vacancy in the office of the chief justice in Orissa High Court will arise following the retirement of present Chief Justice Dr Justice S Muralidhar.
“A vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa would arise in August 2023 consequent upon retirement of Dr Justice S Muralidhar, therefore appointment to that office is required to be made”, it read.
The notification adds, “It is proposed to recommend the name of Mr Justice Subhasis Talapatra, the senior-most Judge from the Tripura High Court, for senior-most appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa”.
Justice Subhasis Talapatra was elevated as a Judge of the Guwahati High Court on November 15, 2011 and on establishment of a separate High Court for the State of Tripura in the year 2013 he opted the High Court of Tripura as his parent High Court.
Besides, Justice Talapatra has been functioning, on transfer, in the High Court of Orissa since June 10, 2022.
The Supreme Court collegium in their notification mentioned, “He has acquired considerable experience of dispensing justice in two High Courts. While considering his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that since its inception in 2013, the High Court of Tripura till date has not got representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr Justice Subhasis Talapatra is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa”.
However, Justice Subhasis Talapatra being a resident of Tripura, it is a matter of great pride for the state as it is the first time in the state’s history that a son of the soil is going to take charge as a High Court Chief Justice.
