Kalyanpur, Jan 24: The month of Magh in the Bengali calendar has brought back the long-lost tradition of ‘Bagher Sinni’ in the villages of Kalyanpur.
This vibrant cultural practice, deeply rooted in folklore, is once again filling the chilly nights with music, dance, and joy.
Teenagers dressed in quirky costumes, with mandatory tiger masks, roam from house to house singing the iconic song, “Sona Boudidi, go batti jalaw, bagh aitache…” Accompanied by harmoniums, drums, and cymbals, they knock on doors late at night, bringing both entertainment and nostalgia.
Families offer rice, lentils, coconuts, or money as gifts, while the tiger-themed performances captivate children and adults alike.
According to local elders, the tradition originated in hill villages to ward off real tiger attacks during night patrols. Over time, it evolved into a unique cultural celebration.
With its revival in Kalyanpur, Bagher Sinni is reconnecting communities with their heritage.
