Agartala, Feb 20: The National Commission for Women (NCW) is actively working to raise awareness about women's rights, with the Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) playing a significant role in protecting these rights.
Speaking at a press conference at the State Guest House this evening, NCW member Dr. Archana Majumdar said this and emphasized the need to increase awareness among women about their rights. She said, various initiatives would be launched to educate women in the remote areas of Tripura.
The event was also attended by TCW chairperson Jharna Debbarma.
On the second day of her state visit, Dr. Majumdar inspected the maternity and gynaecology departments at Agartala Government Medical College. She noted that healthcare services have significantly improved, with the introduction of modern medical equipment and on-going infrastructure development. Once completed, these enhancements are expected to further improve medical services in the state.
Dr. Majumdar also reviewed issues such as child marriage, maternal mortality, and infant mortality in Tripura. She stated that the maternal and infant mortality rates in the state are considerably better than the national average. Additionally, she visited the One Stop Centre in Agartala, which provides support to women facing violence. She expressed satisfaction with the Centre’s infrastructure and services and highlighted that incidents of violence against women have notably decreased.
However, she stressed the need for greater awareness of the POCSO Act.
Women must be made more aware of their rights. The Women’s Commission is committed to connecting more people with various welfare programmes and ensuring women are informed about their entitlements, she said.
Dr. Majumdar concluded by stating that the progress of women is essential for the overall development of the state and the country. She will continue her field visits across Tripura tomorrow.
