Shortly after all the remaining factions of militant outfits NLFT and ATTF were disbanded followed by an agreement with the state and central government, a new militant group reportedly trying to expand its foothold particularly in parts of North Tripura and Dhalai districts.
The police department came to know about its existence after some of the government contractors received extortion notices from the group.
Agencies working under various government departments like DWS and PWD were slapped with extortion notices leading to temporary halt in development works in the area, a senior official of the police department said.
But, soon the police launched a comprehensive operation to neutralize the new group and the situation stumbled back to normalcy.
In the past of one month, two active cadres of the militant group have surrendered before the special branch of the police department.
They had been identified as Samendra Reang, a resident of Anandabazar and Mudiram Reang, a resident of Damcherra area. They surrendered with arms and ammunition at Agartala.
Moreover, police on Saturday night arrested a suspect named Anida Reang from Rajibnagar market in Mamit district of Mizoram. A resident of Bhandarima, he is one of the leading faces of the new group which has essentially recruited their cadres from the Reang dominated areas of Assam, Mizoram and Tripura.
He had been instrumental in the formation of this organization with six of his accomplices. Filip Reang and Jitendra Reang are identified as two senior most leaders of this whole group.
A country-made rifle, seven live cartridges, and three empty cartridges were recovered from his possession.
Police sources said that this new militant is using a small bordering village called Japui as their hideout.
The cadre strength of the outfit would be close to 40. Intelligence units of Tripura Police and other sister agencies had been keeping a close watch on the activities of the outfit, sources added.
