Agartala Sept 28: With barely few days left for the much-awaited Durga puja celebrations, a consignment of Bangladesh’s ‘Padma Hilsa’, weighing around 800 kgs, arrived Tripura on Friday last.
As per reports, it is a part of the first consignment of an expected 2,420 tonnes of Hilsa that is likely to be sent to India by mid October, as planned by the Bangladesh interim government.
Although the diplomacy over the Padma Hilsa keeps changing over the years, its mouth-watering taste equally fascinates the food lovers, especially the Bengalis.
With a lot running in the neighbouring Bangladesh, people were least hopeful of getting a chance of tasting the silvery glazy fish with a stupefying odour this festival season. However, with arrival of the much awaited ‘Silver Crop’ in the local markets of Agartala, people won’t miss the chance now despite higher price per kg than usual.
A local trader in one of the city markets said, “Yesterday, Padma Hilsa reached the state and we are selling it for Rs 1700 per kg”.
“Though we have other varieties of Hilsa, but demand for Padma Hilsa is huge”, he added.
Meanwhile, officials have hailed this as a highly anticipated import in time of festival.
