Agartala Jun 29: Aiming to to draw attention to the deteriorating condition of a crucial road, villagers of Dakshin Padmabil village panchayat area, under Panisagar subdivision, staged a road blockade on Saturday.
The approximately 7-kilometer stretch, connecting the 110-mile filler of Assam-Agartala National Highway to Dakshin Padmabil Duganga Ambika Kund, has languished without renovation for a decade, alleged the protestors.
They said, “The impact of this neglected road extends far beyond inconvenience. With approximately 2000 families relying on it, the road serves as a lifeline for residents. Two schools, two markets, a panchayat office, a sub-health centre, and an SPO camp are all situated along this route, making it essential for daily travel”.
“During the monsoon season, the road’s poor condition poses significant challenges for students, especially the younger ones. Pregnant mothers seeking medical attention also face difficulties, as drivers hesitate to navigate the treacherous path”, said one of the villagers.
The protestors further alleged, “Despite repeated appeals to the local village panchayat office, public representatives have failed to take action”.
Frustrated by the lack of response, locals decided to block the road on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Panisagar SDM, Sushanta Debbarma, arrived at the blockade site and clarified that no formal application regarding the road had been submitted from the area.
He however assured the residents that he would initiate repairs within 15 days after consulting higher authorities.
Later, residents, reassured by the SDM, eventually lifted the five-hour-long blockade.
The community now awaits concrete steps from the administration to restore the road to a safe and usable condition.
