Agartala Feb 12: Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance Tripura’s connectivity through waterways. At a recent press conference at the BJP state headquarters, he shared that jetties are being constructed on the Gomati River. This strategic move will link Tripura to the Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh, further connecting the state to major port cities like Kolkata, Paradip, and Visakhapatnam. The enhanced connectivity is poised to open up international markets for Tripura’s agricultural products.
The minister lauded the Union Budget, describing it as a progressive blueprint for development. He underscored the Rs 25,000 crore allocation dedicated to maritime infrastructure, which is expected to stimulate indigenous shipbuilding and attract private and foreign investments. This sector is anticipated to create employment opportunities for over ten lakh skilled workers.
Highlighting the budget’s commitment to innovation, Sonowal welcomed the Rs 500 crore allocation for an AI Centre of Excellence. He emphasized its potential in driving technological advancements. Additionally, addressing Tripura’s tourism potential, Sonowal revealed that the ministry is evaluating proposals for river cruises, lake cruises, and water sports at Dumboor Lake, a well-known tourist attraction.
Discussing the broader economic impact, Sonowal asserted that the budget lays the groundwork for India to achieve its goal of becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He noted the positive impact on the middle class, predicting an increase in consumption. Addressing concerns about revenue deficits due to income tax rebates, he assured that fiscal reforms would mitigate these issues. Sonowal also credited the introduction of GST for revolutionizing tax collection and dismantling the "Inspector Raj" era of the Congress regime.
This announcement marks a significant step towards enhancing Tripura's global connectivity and economic prospects through strategic waterway developments.
