Agartala Feb 11: A delegation of Tribal Students Union (TSU) on Tuesday submitted a deputation to the Director, Tribal Welfare Department, Govt. of Tripura presenting three significant demands on behalf of the student community.
The student leaders raised serious concern around the delayed receipt of scholarships last year, which left many students unable to fill out application forms for this year's scholarships.
“This delay has led to considerable frustration and anger among the students, prompting the union to demand alternative arrangements to address the issue”, said Sujit Tripura, State Secretary TSU.
Additionally, he highlighted the need for the appointment of hostel superintendents and night guards in all ST (Scheduled Tribe) hostels across the state. TSU delegation also emphasized that the presence of these personnel is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of the students residing in these hostels.
Another key demand put forth by the union is the increase in the allowance provided to students staying in boarding houses.
Tripura said, “Currently, students receive an allowance of Rs. 80, which is insufficient to meet their needs. The amount should be raised to Rs. 150”.
After submitting the deputation, the organization's general secretary, Sujit Tripura, spoke to the media, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
He stated that while the government claims to be tribal and Tiprasa-friendly, the realities faced by the students tell a different story. The challenges encountered by the students reveal the gaps in the government's approach to supporting the tribal community.
The organization's president, Netaji Debbarma, and other members of the union were present during the deputation, reinforcing the collective determination to see these demands addressed.
