Kalyanpur March 21: Residents of Daocherra village staged a protest demonstration in front of the Kalyanpur Police Station on Friday, demanding justice for Bikash Debnath, accused of torturing his wife.
According to details, Bikash Debnath was arrested in Kalyanpur on Thursday night, accused of torturing his wife, Arpita Acharjee and allegedly setting her on fire for giving birth to a girl child.
Arpita had earlier eloped with Vikas out of love, but claimed he burned her about a year and a half ago due to her girl childbirth. She was hospitalized but did not receive proper treatment owing to her father's financial constraints.
On Thursday, Arpita protested with her child outside the Chief Minister's residence in Agartala, demanding justice and medical treatment.
Following the intervention of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, she was admitted to GB Hospital alter in the day.
However, the residents of Deocherra defended Bikash, claiming he was innocent, and that the fire was accidental.
Villagers staged a dharna demanding his release and questioned the delayed FIR filing.
Meanwhile, Bikash has been sent to court under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, as authorities continue investigations into the case.
