Kumarghat, Feb 1: Facing a severe drinking water shortage for a week, residents of Ward 15 under Pabiacherra constituency in Kumarghat blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway on Sunday.
Villagers, including women and children, protested against the government's inaction and demanded a permanent solution to their water crisis.
Despite promises under the Jal Jeevan Mission, residents claimed that they have not received clean drinking water for months.
Besides, government water pumps of the area often remain useless, the locals added.
The blockade halted traffic for hours, following which police and water department officials rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, water tanks also rushed to the area to supply water to the villagers, after which the agitating villagers called off the protest. However, they warned of further protests if a lasting solution is not provided.
