Technical Skills as Career Choice

We are aware that low skills continue poverty and dissimilarity. When done right, skills development can reduce unemployment, increase productivity, and improve standards of living. If we enhance the skills of any individual’s means we are contributing towards positive transformation.  We have discussed various skills and this time we shall discuss the importance of technical skills.

Technical skills refer to the acquired knowledge, expertise, and interactions needed to perform a specific task, including the mastery of required materials, tools, or technologies. One of the best institutes from where we can learn technical skills is Indian Technical Institutes or popularly known as ITIs.

There are many courses which are offered by ITIs. The Electrician is mostly a 2-year ITI course which can be opted by boys or girls. The electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, transmission lines, stationary machines, and related equipment. Fitter course is a trade related to the Mechanical branch. Fitter syllabus includes the knowledge about fittings like Pipe fittings, Machine fitting, and structure fittings are the main working areas, on which a fitter works.

Plumber is a vocational program that deals with the study of fitting, installing, and maintaining water-related machinery like big water pumps, water generators, water turbines, water pipes, and many other things. The duration of the plumber course is mostly 1 year. There is importance of the plumber course after Jal Jeevan Mission has started many activities around the country.

Diesel Mechanic is a curriculum that educates students about many elements of diesel engines, such as alignment and adjustment, addressing defects in cars, maintaining diesel-powered equipment, etc.

Motor vehicle mechanic courses are a two-year vocational program where the students know about major overhauling, repairing and servicing skills of various motor vehicles including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles or scooters.

Welder is a 1-year job-oriented trade which offers studies about welding, various types of welding, tools and equipment used in welding, materials used in welding, electricity, principles of welding, advantages, disadvantages, and many more related to welding.

Through the pump operator course, the candidates are provided in-depth knowledge in terms of Pump Mechanical including repairing pumps of machinery, misalignment of the pump shaft, slippage of the drive belt, worn bearings or need for lubrication, dismantle pumps and perform repairs, using hand-tools, etc.

Dress Making is a custom clothing vocational trade. The duration of trade is one year with two semesters of six month each. Dressmaking is the craft of sewing clothes and dresses and the art of sewing a beautiful dress from fabric. There are many such skills which are important to become successful in life. One may learn these skills from the IT Is or other similar technical institutes and build their careers through their technical skills.

The Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship offers a range of vocational training courses catering to the needs of different sectors of the economy/ Labour market. The vocational training programmes are delivered under the aegis of Directorate General of Training (DGT). Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS)with variants and Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS) are two pioneer schemes of DGT for strengthening vocational training. Our youths may build their careers by becoming an expert in technical skills.
