Mayor lays foundation for waterbody development at Durga Chowmuhani, Agartala

A neglected pond tucked behind New Star Club in Durga Chowmuhani, Ward No. 18 is set to undergo a transformation, as Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder laid the foundation stone for its development in a brief ceremony on Friday.

The event, attended by Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Corporator and Central Zone Chairperson Ratna Dutta, along with other dignitaries and local residents, marked the beginning of a project aimed at reviving abandoned waterbodies across the city.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Majumder emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader plan to bring unused and neglected ponds under development.

He noted that for years, several waterbodies in Agartala had remained abandoned and unused, but since the formation of the BJP-led government, efforts have been made to identify and restore them.

“The goal is not only to conserve these ponds but also to make them usable for citizens in ways that serve social and welfare purposes,” he said.

The Mayor highlighted that the project will contribute to environmental conservation while also creating spaces that can be utilized for community activities.

He stressed that such initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to balancing ecological preservation with urban development.

Local residents expressed satisfaction with the move, noting that the beautification and revival of the pond will enhance the area’s environment and provide practical benefits for everyday needs.

The project is expected to improve the aesthetics of the locality while offering a cleaner, more functional space for the community.
