VC polls: 1,724 nominations filed so far

As many as 1,724 nomination papers had been filed so far for Village Committee elections while the total number of candidates who had filed their papers stood at 1,721, an official of the state election commission has said. 

While all major political parties have started filing nomination papers, no candidates from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have filed their papers, the official added. The elections for the politically crucial village committees under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District are scheduled on September 28. 

The elections are being conducted in 587 VCs after a considerable gap of 10 years with the intervention of the Supreme Court. The total number of seats in those VCs stands at 4,597. 

According to a break-up data shared by the official, a total of 865 CPIM candidates, 08 INC candidates, 839 Tipra Motha Party candidates, 03 CPIM candidates and 05 candidates from different other parties filed nomination papers. 

Sources in the BJP said that the party was waiting for the alliance talks with the Tipra Motha Party to take final shape. “A fruitful meeting has been chaired by the Union Home Minister at New Delhi in the presence of state BJP and Tipra Motha Party top brass. Within a couple of days, the whole scenario will be crystal clear. And, hopefully a seat-sharing adjustment shall be worked out,” a BJP leader said.
