Traffic Department engages Maharajganj Market traders to tackle festive congestion ahead of Durga Puja

With Durga Puja approaching and traffic volumes expected to surge, the Agartala Traffic Unit has launched a new initiative to improve road management by directly engaging with market committees, trader associations, and unions. The programme began on Wednesday with a crucial meeting at Maharajganj Market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the city.

Officials met with traders and market committee members to discuss persistent issues such as illegal parking, violation of no‑entry rules, disregard for one‑way traffic regulations, and the prolonged presence of heavy vehicles on narrow roads. These practices, they noted, have been causing severe congestion and inconvenience to pedestrians and shoppers.

Traffic officials stressed that Maharajganj Market is a vital centre of daily commerce, attracting large crowds. However, without adherence to traffic norms, the area becomes a bottleneck, especially during peak hours. The meeting sought to identify local challenges and gather traders’ perspectives before finalising measures to streamline traffic flow.

A senior traffic officer explained that the initiative is designed to move beyond punitive action and instead foster coordination between authorities, traders, and the public. The goal is to ensure smooth traffic movement during the festive season and beyond, reducing hardship for residents and visitors.

Officials confirmed that similar meetings will be held in other key markets, unions, and motor stands across Agartala. By listening to stakeholders and implementing joint solutions, the department hopes to create a more efficient and sustainable traffic system for the city.

The initiative reflects a shift towards collaborative traffic management, recognising that enforcement alone cannot solve congestion without community participation.
